Next to Old Nottoway Antiques stands one of the oldest houses in the Nottoway Court House vicinity.
Built around 1812 or earlier, it was owned by some of the following prominent families in Nottoway history: Randolphs, Jacksons, Tuggles, Witmers, and Carsons.
History The Randolphs The home was once a Tavern in the early 1800's, owned by Peter Randolph, Sr. His son, Peter Randolph, Jr., became a Judge of the Circuit Court in Nottoway, and around 1820 moved to Louisiana. His son, John Hampton Randolph, built the famous Nottoway Plantation Home in White Castle, LA in 1858.
The Bacon-Hardaway Duel It is also the home where, on July 1818, Dr. John S. Hardaway died in after being mortally wounded in a knife duel with Colonel Bacon. The duel took place in front of the Nottoway County Court House - pictured below.
